The Alachua County Commission correctly decided last week that negotiation is better than uncompromising confrontation when it comes to Plum Creek. Commissioners voted 3-2 to reject a proposed legal challenge over the annexation of 1,200 acres of the timber company’s land into the city of Hawthorne.
Now all parties must work together to minimize environmental impacts while maintaining economic benefits. These kind of negotiations will be critical as an even larger development plan from Plum Creek moves closer to county consideration.
