Before Hawthorne readies itself for the recently annexed Plum Creek property, before the company’s less-than-certain approval from Alachua County, the timber giant is busy preparing to recruit companies that might want to move onto its land.
The effort includes an army of local, state and national economic development experts, planners and consultants, and trips to areas with model developments.
The effort also extends beyond Plum Creek’s property as its recruitment plans are intertwined with county and even region-wide economic development strategies developed by the Gainesville-Area Chamber of Commerce to capitalize on the area’s strengths, in particular to build on research and talent coming out of the University of Florida and job training out of the nation’s top-ranked community college in Santa Fe College.
