Charlie Lane: A preeminent university needs a preeminent city

The University of Florida has launched a first-of-its-kind strategic development planning process that will take a long-range and big-picture look at the future of UF in the context of the city of Gainesville and Alachua County. This effort will examine the future through the lens of the university’s preeminence goals and its aspiration to become a top-10 public university.

Key to our success will be the people of this great university community. Achieving preeminence requires attracting and retaining the best and brightest researchers, faculty and students. It also requires a diverse community where economic opportunity and vibrant quality of life are abundant for all.

n short, a preeminent university requires a preeminent university city. These are lofty targets requiring strategic, collaborative and thoughtful consideration.
