Susan Baird: Envision Alachua vote is loss for community

On Tuesday, we had an unprecedented opportunity to assist those who are underemployed or unemployed in our county and make a positive impact for generations to come. After decades of talking about Plan East Gainesville, we had the chance to usher in future quality jobs focused on reducing the income disparity for which Gainesville is nationally recognized. This was possible thanks to the dedicated efforts of many stakeholders involved in the four-plus years planning process for the Envision Alachua sector plan.

The process produced the most balanced plan that gives everyone something to call a win. It’s a win for the people and for the trees, a plan in which 88 percent of the land in question is placed in permanent conservation or preservation via deed restrictions and 12 percent is available for major jobs centers adjacent to existing infrastructure and dense, compact development guided by a newly established water ethic.
