As the former director of the Alachua Conservation Trust, Robert Hutchinson negotiated several land deals with Plum Creek Timber company. But the one he is proposing now as a county commissioner might be his most ambitious. Hutchinson envisions a series of purchases and swaps with Weyerhaeuser in a plan that would turn Tacachale, a longtime state-run center for people with intellectual disabilities, into a broader assisted care facility.
Weyerhaeuser Real Estate Director Tim Jackson said the company is open to discussing Hutchinson’s proposal but said it will not get involved in the effort to get the state to surplus land.
