Editorial: Making plans for Tacachale’s future
The numbers in The Sun’s recent stories about Tacachale show our community must prepare for changes at the center.
… The numbers and trends suggest change is inevitable. The large size of Tacachale’s campus and its location in the middle of east Gainesville have inspired proposals such as the University of Florida taking over the site and a land deal that would serve as a substitute for the Envision Alachua plan.
… Those ideas hold promise but shouldn’t distract from the fact that lives would be affected by Tacachale’s closure. Talk of the facility’s future should first focus on the well being of its residents and workers.
