Addressing Chamber, Fuchs praises Gainesville's innovation

University of Florida President Kent Fuchs challenged the community to show the same unity of purpose that allowed Cornell University to win its underdog bid under his leadership to build a tech campus in New York City against more than a dozen competitors.

Fuchs was keynote speaker at the 2015 Gainesville Area Chamber of Commerce meeting...The annual event gives the Chamber an opportunity to tell members and guests about its accomplishments in the prior year and to announce goals for the year ahead.

Chamber President and CEO Tim Giuliani ran through the list of accomplishments, including $256 million in new projects expected to result in nearly 300 high-paying jobs...Giuliani said the Chamber also made progress on regional partnerships with relation to Envision Alachua, Plum Creek’s development and conservation plan for its land in the eastern part of the county. Plum Creek’s initial comp plan amendment application was recommended for denial by county staff.

“As you all are aware, this has the potential to absolutely repaint our region’s landscape on competitiveness and our opportunities and gives us hope for things we can’t see today,” Giuliani said.
